REMINDER: The Maintenance Checklist For The Fall

Fall brings its own set of maintenance tasks to ensure your home and outdoor spaces are prepared for the coming cold months. From raking leaves to inspecting your heating system, this homeowner's autumn checklist will serve as a reminder of the essential seasonal chores for a cozy, worry-free fall. While the tasks are in no particular order and not exhaustive, they include:

  1. Trim & Clean-up trees, bushes and other foliage. Address overgrown trees, bushes, and other foliage

  2. Clean & Clear your gutters. With all the rain we’ve had this year, hopefully you completed this one. But if you haven’t, make sure you have proper drainage with your gutter system. Reach out to a professional, if need be.

  3. Inspect & Service your winter equipment. Check snow blowers and shovels to keep them in working order.

  4. Test & Service the boiler or home heating unit. And while you’re at it replace the filters and stock up with extras.

  5. Weatherproof your home. Walk your home inside and out by checking the windows and doors. Remember CAULK is your best friend around those gaps, cracks, or openings.

  6. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace the batteries if needed.

  7. Inspect & Clean (if needed) your fireplace and chimney. Ensure safety for the cozy evenings.

  8. Weatherize your pipes. Prevent freezing during those cold months.

  9. Give the lawn one last trim. Cutting it low will reduce the chance of snow mold and help it recover in the spring.

  10. Prep an emergency kit. It's not a bad idea to prepare an emergency kit. Add the essentials like flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit. Having this kit on hand can provide peace of mind in case of power outages or other emergencies during the colder months.
